Healthy brain function is critical to performing any mental function. The brain is a part of the central nervous system which controls many functions in the body. It plays a critical role in almost everything we do. This includes foods such as pastries, cake, biscuits, white bread, white dinner rolls, white rice, white sugar and numerous other high fat and high glycemic foods. Also, avoid consuming soft drinks which negatively affect health. Choose foods low in saturated fat and low glycemic foods. This includes foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. However, reduce the consumption of white potatoes. Consume whole grain foods such as brown rice, quinoa, steel cut oats, and breads made with whole wheat flours. Other healthy food choices include:
Beans – lentils and black beans
Cruciferous vegetables – broccoli and cauliflower
Dark chocolate (limited amounts)
Fish – wild salmon and sardines
Green leafy vegetables – spinach and lettuce
Pomegranates and pomegranate juice
Tea specifically freshly brewed tea such as green tea and yerba mate tea
To help maintain a healthy functioning brain you can do specific exercises to assist in this process. Our brains need mental stimulation to remain strong and healthy. It a good idea to do crossword puzzles and play mentally orientated games that challenge you and require you to use good thinking skills. Learning new skills that challenge you also help with brain health. This helps to in retaining brain agility and keeping your brain in good shape.
One of the most important things truckers must do to say awake and alert on the road is to get a sufficient amount of sleep. Sleepy drivers are dangerous on the road. Drivers who fail to get the proper amount of sleep can be sleepy once they get behind the wheel. They can also be too tired to do their job correctly and safely. Sleep deprivation is a major cause of truck related accidents. Sleep loss can result in irritability and impatience. This can make drivers less tolerant of other drivers on the road and possibly cause them to take unnecessary risks with their truck. Drivers who suffer with sleep apnea need to follow their instructions for managing their condition. Hypertension and heart problems have been linked to sleep deprivation.
Physical Fitness is important in maintaining the overall health of the body. You should set a goal to exercise at least 30 minutes each day. If you cannot exercise 30 minutes at least do 15 minutes. Exercise is one of the most effective things you can to do to increase energy levels. Exercising in the morning before you begin your day actually gets the endorphins flowing. Exercising will not only help you to be more energized, but it also has positive mental effects. Exercise has been shown to improve memory and relieve depression. Exercise even if you don’t feel like it. This will enable you to be alert and productive throughout the day. You may be amazed at how much it improves your day.
Far too many truckers fail to make exercise a part of their daily routine. Many claim they are too busy or tired to do too. Fortunately, you can get substantial benefits from as little as 15 minutes of daily exercise. A walk or jog around the truck stop is very beneficial. You can also keep a few pieces of exercise equipment in the truck like dumbbells, kettlebells or weights. You can get a small folding rebounder which is a small trampoline and bounce or jump on this. This allows you to engage in very effective exercises. Additionally, many truckstops have fitness centers. So take advantage of opportunities to exercise. You will receive fantastic overall health benefits from doing so.
