The St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund (SCF) is a Christian-based 501©(3) not-for-profit organization which provides financial assistance to professional truck drivers whose medical problems have let to financial hardship. SCF also conducts health research to benefit professional truck drivers and the trucking industry.
Truck drivers employed by major carriers generally have health insurance. However, many self employed drivers and those operating small fleets often don’t have health insurance due to budget restraints. Estimates are that more than 30% of truck drivers do not have any health insurance. This can put these drivers in the precarious position of not being able to afford basic coverage for themselves of their families. Truck drivers that do have health insurance can be left with unpaid medical bills or needing special equipment to help them with their health condition. This is where the St. Christopher Truckers Development Fund can help.
A large percentage of truck drivers have major health problems. Longhaul drivers in particular have irregular work hours and spend days and weeks on the road. This limits their access to regular health care. When they don’t seek medical assistance in the early stages of disease the condition continues becomes more serious. Severe illnesses can lead to hospitalization and disability If drivers become disabled are are unable to work for extended period of time this can cause serious financial hardship for themselves and their families.
A large majority of truck drivers are overweight or obese. Excess weight contributes to one of the most significant causes of other serious conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease and diabetes. It has been shown that the majority of truck drivers that have high blood pressure are overweight or obese. Excess weight can contribute to the cause of high blood pressure and heart disease because it increases the work of the heart as it pumps more blood through blood vessels. It can also raise the heart rate. Excess weight is a major factor in sleep apnea cases. This is because having excess weight puts pressure on your breathing passageways which can cause them to be constricted.
The mission of SCF is to help professional drivers and their families who have financial needs due to medical problems. Assistance may be in the form of direct payment for medical services or prescription drugs, assistance with expenses while recovering from illness and out of work, or negotiating price reductions with insurance companies, medical providers and hospitals.
A truck driver needing assistance must submit an application along with signed authorization to release medical records and all other information requested for review. If the application is approved the fund pays the bills directly to the provider. If the application is denied a representative of the organization may be able to direct the truck driver to other organizations which may be able to provide help.
