The prostate gland is a walnut-sized gland about the size of a walnut which surrounds the urethra. It is located just under the male bladder and is an integral part of the male reproductive system. Its function is to produce semen and the fluid that helps to nourish and transport the sperm. It also aids the process of ejaculation due to the squeezing contractions of the prostate during orgasm.
Prostatitis is the term which refers to inflammation of the prostate gland. This is a condition where the prostate gland becomes inflamed due to an infection or another cause. Prostatitis is often a painful or irritating condition requiring medical care.
There are four types of prostatitis which are:
1. Acute bacterial prostatitis
2. Chronic bacterial prostatitis
3. Chronic prostatitis without infection
4. Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis
Acute bacterial prostatitis and chronic bacterial prostatitis are types caused by bacteria. Physicians typically prescribe antibiotics to treat bacterial prostatitis. Antibiotics oftentimes cause unpleasant or dangerous side effects. Antibiotics destroy healthy cells in addition to the diseased cells in the body. They also cause allergic reactions in some people.
