Meditation Can Reduce Stress Levels of Commercial Drivers and Reduce Accidents

Commercial truck drivers are under an extreme amount of stress. In fact, they experience higher levels of stress than those employed in other occupations. There are a number of factors which contribute to this. Among them are irregular hours and long hours on the road. These factors cause truckers to get an insufficient amount of sleep. This affects their ability to be sufficiently alert enough to be able drive safely. As a result they often end up driving while sleep-impaired. This puts other motorists and themselves at greater risks of accidents.

Truck drivers are often under pressure to meet strict pick-up or delivery schedules. In many cases truck drivers are penalized if they don’t meet these set appointments. This causes drivers an extreme amount of stress trying to meet these schedules. There are many situations that can happen on any day of the week that can affect their ability to meet schedules. This can include be delayed by accidents, mechanical problems, etc. Drivers have been known to make very risky moves while driving which has caused them to have accidents. Some of these accidents have resulted in serious injuries or death.

Meditation is an ancient Buddhist practice known to improve mood and reduce stress. Meditation  improves health and increases the immune system. Meditation can also boost health, improve concentration and counteract stress and depression.

Mindfulness meditation has been known to have a positive effect on the brain and plays a significant role in reducing stress hormones in the body. The term “mindfulness” has been used to refer to a psychological state of awareness.

Mindfulness meditation is a self-directed practice that involves focusing your mind on the present. In this state you are aware of your thoughts and actions in the present, without judging yourself. Ideally, you should sit  in a quiet place and put aside all thoughts of the past and future. You should simply concentrate on  the present. It is important to keep an upright, erect posture. Taking the time to do this for a few as ten, fifteen or twenty minutes each day could greatly reduce stress levels, improve health and even help in preventing accidents.
